MONETA – The Waynesboro Little Giants ran into a big problem Friday night. Making the long trip to Staunton River, the Giants ran into a buzzsaw and fell 42-7 to the Golden Eagles.
By halftime, last season’s 3A state semifinalists had already scored five touchdowns, three by Grayson Overstreet and a pair by T.J. Tester. With a running clock, the second half went mercifully fast as each team scored once.
Jasper Stein ran it in for Staunton River from 15 yards, before Waynesboro avoided the shutout as Dequiondre Clark scored from the 5 and Luke Wells added the extra point with just 1:14 remaining in the contest.
Since WHS head coach Derek McDaniel is also the school’s athletic director, he is the one who scheduled the Golden Eagles, one of the elite programs in the state, for the past two seasons.
“If you want to get better, you have to play teams like this,” McDaniel said. “You have to play your “A” game and hope they make some mistakes.”
Mistakes were few and far between for the Golden Eagles, who gained 366 yards on the ground and only passed twice for the entire game. Waynesboro had exactly one third of Staunton River’s total yards (122).
Overstreet and Kalip Jones each surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for Staunton River as the Eagles averaged 7.3 yards per carry.
For the Little Giants, who opened with a win over Wilson last week, D.J. Green carried 10 times for 61 yards and Phillip Monterrozo had three nice runs for 46 yards. Quarterback DuJuan Moore completed one pass to Marendon Jones for seven yards.
Two early fumbles by Waynesboro added to the Little Giants’ troubles.
“The speed of the game increased significantly,” McDaniel said. “But we showed a little more life, more energy and intensity in the second half.”
Jacquintious Chambers and Monterrozo sustained injuries during the game for Waynesboro.
