As the calendar turns to August high school football teams return to work.
Some will return a week earlier than others.
The LHSAA, through a new rule passed in January, gave football coaches the option of going through spring practice or exchanging spring practice for an extra week of practice in the fall. Those who skipped spring practice will take the field on Monday, while those who practiced in the spring will go through heat acclimation drills and begin full workouts on Aug. 8.
Among the teams skipping spring practice in favor of the early start is the Calvary Cavaliers.
“We didn’t practice in the spring so we’ll be in pads (Monday),’’ Calvary coach John Bachman said.
Area football teams begin work on Monday aiming for better results this year. Last year, no area teams won state football titles. Haynesville was the runner-up in Class 1A and St. Mary’s was the runner-up in Division IV.
The road to the Superdome begins this week in the heat of August.
