The No. 2 Resurrection Christian football team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2A state playoffs with a 30-20 victory over Platte Valley on Saturday.
The Cougars beat Platte Valley for the second time this season while keeping their perfect record intact. Resurrection Christian won four games by more than 40 points during the regular season, and Saturday’s win wasn’t quite that lopsided, which is also to be expected come playoff time.
The Cougars used an early Josh Perl interception to establish solid field position before Brin Hayden put them up 7-0 on a two-yard touchdown run. Platte Valley would respond with 14 points of their own and led 14-7 before Hayden found Michael Stevenson on a five-yard pass to tie the game up. Stevenson then put Resurrection Christian in the lead, 17-14 with a 24-yard field goal.
It would stay that way into halftime. The Cougars struck first in the second half on another five-yard scoring toss from Hayden to Stevenson. The Cougars would then extend their lead to 30-14 on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Hayden to Connor Stahla with 4:37 left in the game.
Stevenson finished with 159 yards receiving on six catches to go along with two touchdowns. Hayden was 15-of-29 passing with three touchdown tosses while Zane Zuhlke had two interceptions defensively.
The Cougars also scraped past Platte Valley 24-22 on Sept. 17.
Resurrection Christian will host No. 10 Delta in the quarterfinals. The game time has not yet been set.
