Not long after the game started, it was essentially put to bed. Dixie High girls soccer scored three goals in the first six minutes on its way to a resounding 9-1 victory over the Aztec Tigers (New Mexico) on Saturday morning.
Lindsey Barben got things started in the fourth minute with a rebound tap-in from a corner kick. A minute later, Starlee Woodbury broke free down the right side and set up Kennedy Warnick in the box for an easy goal.
Woodbury grabbed the first of her four goals two minutes later, beating a defender to the ball and scoring into an open net.
“She’s going to be very dangerous because it was always run and hustle and get the ball. This year, she can maneuver the ball, manipulate the ball, she’s got some technique,” Flyers head coach Burt Myers said.
The Tigers’ Autumn Peterson scored in the 21st minute when her cross from the left side found the back of the net. Woodbury and Kelsey Call scored twice for the Flyers who led 5-1 at halftime.
Woodbury scored two more, Warnick added one and Salamasina Schwalger added the ninth goal, which ended the game on a mercy rule with five minutes left.
Aztec had lost 2-0 to Snow Canyon less than 24 hours before Saturday morning’s kickoff, which contributed to the fast start by Dixie.
“Snow Canyon played them really hard and Snow Canyon is a really good team, so (Aztec) came out a little bit flat,” Myers said. “They’re a better team than what they showed here today, but again we’re going to be a decent team this year too.”
The Flyers improved to 2-0 on the season after their 8-0 win over Delta on Friday, and will host Uintah this coming Thursday at 7 p.m.
Hurricane 1, Delta 0
Abby Hall scored the long goal for Hurricane, which improved to 2-0 with a win over the Rabbits on Saturday morning. It was Hall’s fifth goal of the season in just two games, after scoring four against Maeser Prep on Thursday. The Tigers are at Millard on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Desert Hills 0, Syracuse 0
The Thunder had two chances to break a scoreless tie in the closing minutes of the first and second halves, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Desert Hills hosts East on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Mountain View 5, Pine View 3
The Panthers lost their second game of the season in a close game with the Bruins. Whitney Christensen, Shaneice Lourenco and McKenna Plumb each scored a goal for Pine View. The Panthers host Millard on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
