Prom is now only a few days away and students are getting more and more anxious. Everyone is getting their plans together, girls are picking up their dresses from alterations, boys are picking up their tuxedos, parents are buying promenade tickets all for the preparation of this one day. There has been a constant planning with making appointments and ways of transportation and its all going to fall in place. At Chartiers Valley High School, they do their own preparations to assure all of the high school students going to prom have a safe but fun time. One of the things they do every year to make sure students get there safely without being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol before, after, or during prom, they do a mock drinking and driving car accident where seniors and juniors watch an act of the aftermath of car crash related to being under the influence. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for high school students to plan on drinking and/or using drugs for prom. Allowing these students to watch a realistic situation that occurs on not only prom night but regularly will give them a different perspective of how drinking or being under the influence of drugs can change their lives at an instant. Senior Drill team member Martha Masanzi says “The experience was interesting. It helped to see what might happen if we are irresponsible so that we can avoid anything bad happening.” This is beneficial to show students they can be safe for themselves and the people around them.
