The rain has forced several area football games scheduled for tonight to be postponed.
The Riverheads at Buffalo Gap showdown will now be played Saturday at 6 p.m.
Buffalo Gap’s athletic director Andrew Grove sent an email out Friday afternoon announcing the change “due to facility conditions and the projected game time forecast.” Grove also wrote in his email that gates for Saturday’s game will open at 4:30 p.m.
Asked why the game was moved to Saturday instead of Monday, Grove responded, “No coach ever wants a game postponed and have their week of prep shortened and routines changed. By going to Saturday they can at least replicate what it feels like to be preparing for a Saturday playoff game.”
Grove said he expects the field to be in better shape by Saturday night, especially if there is some sunshine and a breeze during the day. The AccuWeather forecast for Swoope on Saturday is calling for some morning showers, but partly sunny by the early afternoon with temperatures near 75 degrees.
Also, there will be two Monday games. Broadway will be in Staunton to play Robert E. Lee Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Waynesboro will be at Harrisonburg that same night at 7.
Meanwhile, the Wilson Memorial at Luray and Stuarts Draft at Stonewall Jackson games tonight are still on as scheduled.
Since Wednesday night Luray’s athletic director Don Ehlers has recorded 2 1/2 inches of rain on his football field, but most of the rain stopped by late Thursday night. Ehlers said there’s been a fine mist falling throughout Friday, but he expects everything to be fine by tonight.
“We’re in good shape,” said Ehlers.
