Smoky Mountain alum Cal Raleigh has been named the preseason ACC freshman of the year by the website D1BASEBALL.com.
Raleigh is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound catcher for Florida State. As a high school senior, he was tabbed the 2015 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year and the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
In his third varsity season for the Mustangs, Raleigh batted .459 with 23 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, 10 home runs and five doubles for the WNCAC champion Mustangs (17-6). He was 1-0 as a pitcher with a 3.62 earned-run average and eight strikeouts in 9.2 innings.
Raleigh played for the Haywood County Post 47 team last summer and earned the American Legion Area IV Player of the Year award. Raleigh batted .431 with 39 RBIs, 13 doubles, eight home runs and a triple. His production helped Haywood County (25-7) reach the American Legion state tournament for the first time.
