BRENTWOOD — Ravenwood’s boys soccer team fell behind early in Saturday’s Class AAA sectional matchup against visiting Hendersonville, but the Raptors rebounded to advance to the Class AAA State Tournament behind a 2-1 win.
Hendersonville took the lead in the 10th minute when Darius Campbell finished off a cross from just in front of midfield to beat Ravenwood keeper Jack Hyatt.
It appeared as if the Commandos would keep the lead following a great slide tackle in the box that snuffed out a Chris Barker goal for the Raptors, but Ravenwood’s Jake Hill was in the right place at the right time, burying the rebound to make it 1-1 in the 28th minute.
“Sometimes you get those rebounds and players aren’t always ready, but when it gets to this point of the season you’ve got to be ready for everything,” Ravenwood coach Jose Londono said.
Five minutes later, the Raptors were ready again when Grayson Hetherington saw a shot kick off the left post and bounce out.
This time it was Barker on the finishing end of the rebound as he beat the Commando keeper for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
“My goal this year has been to follow up goals and that was one of them,” Barker said. “I couldn’t have placed it better.”
Hendersonville increased the offensive pressure in the second half and had a few more chances, punctuated by another Campbell shot that went just high and off the crossbar in the 72nd minute, but the Commandos couldn’t sneak another one by Hyatt.
“For being down 2-1 at half, to come out and lay it on the line like that, you’ve got to be proud of the effort,” Hendersonville coach Russ Plummer said. “What else can you do?”
