Richmond’s hopeful run at an eighth state title ended immediately at the Division 3 state finals in Mount Pleasant.
Whitehall — the No. 5-seeded team in the tournament — got the best of No. 4-seeded Richmond with a 37-29 win in the quarterfinals. Whitehall will now move on to face No. 1-seeded Dundee in Saturday’s semifinals.
Richmond came out firing, using pins by Colton McKiernan (171), August Aiken (285) and Aaron Kilburn (125) to jump to a 29-9 lead after the first eight matches.
But the Vikings dominated the rest of the night as they rattled off six straight wins to end the quarterfinal match. Dominick Haynes (130), Reiley Brown (135) and Josh Thommen all had pins in that stretch for Whitehall.
The final match was also locked up by Joe Haynes (160), who won in a 8-4 decision over Zach Roberts to send the Vikings to the next stage.
Of course, Richmond ended their season with quite a bit of hardware. The Blue Devils won their 28th Blue Water Area Conference title and took home their eighth straight regional title.
