The Palm Desert High School girls’ golf team hosted the 15th annual Chappy Wheeler Golf Invitational over the weekend, winning the title with a two-day scored an 818.
The Aztecs shot 411 Friday at The Lakes Country Club in Palm Desert, followed by a 407 score Saturday at The Springs Club in Rancho Mirage. The 818 total easily won the event, with John Burroughs High School of Burbank shooting 843. Great Oak was third at 863, while Xavier College Prep of Palm Desert was fourth at 892.
In individual play, Vera Markevich of Xavier Prep won the title with rounds of 70 and 74 for a 144 total. Madison Rincon of Palm Desert was second at 149, followed by Ashley Phelps of Burroughs at 153, Ellen Choi of Great Oak at 153 (losing a card playoff), Elle Otten of Xavier Prep at 154 and Madison Walker of Palm Desert at 154 (sixth through a card playoff).
Palm Desert 202, Ayala 244: In a Thursday match at The Springs Club in Rancho Mirage, the Aztecs coasted to the victory behind balanced team scoring.
Madison Walker was medalist in the event at 37, followed by Dana Condon at 38, Lily Rodriguez at 39, Madison Rincon at 39 and Jasmine Owings at 49.
Anisha Choi led Ayala with a 45.
Palm Desert is now 5-0 overall.
Xavier Prep in Beaumont meet: The Saints competed in the Beaumont Mini Meet at Beaumont High School, with Braulia Ramierez leading the Xavier boys with a ninth-place finish at 15:51.
Adrihel Ibarra was 21st at 16:41, with Andres Lopez Ospina 26th at 16:46, Jesus Arzapalo 32nd at 17:07 and Caesar Vallejo 35th at 17:13.
In the girls division, Allyson McClelland was 10th for the Saints at 20:25. Haley Varela was 23rd at 21:19, followed by Angelina Tapia in 24th at 21:21, Mia Limon in 32nd at 21:52 and Brooklyn Nunez in 42nd at 23:43.
La Quinta in Laguna Hills Invitational: Akemi Von Scherrwon won the freshman girls race in a time of 17.47, a new freshman record for the Laguna Hills event. La Quinta’s Ashley Waters (21:11) was 19th overall in freshman race.
Coachella Valley in Salton Sea Invitational: The Arabs worked their way into the championship game of the tournament with a group win and then an upset of No. 1 seed Moreno Valley before falling in the championship match to Yucca Valley.
The Arabs lost the championship in 25-15, 23-25.
On offense the Arabs were led by tournament most valuable player Paola Moya with 40 assists. Lesley Chavez added 38 assists.
Iliana Corona had 23 kills, Miranda Torres had 20 kills and Azalee Box had 16 kills for the Arabs. Daisy Miranda added 24 digs.
In the sophomore race, Francine Ansley was sixth in 19:17. Itzel Chavez was 10th (20:16) and Mikka Von Scherr finished at 23:56.
In the senior Division 1 race, Brandie Lopez was 12th in 20:44, while Maddy Silva (23:39) and Evelyn Sarabia (23:41) also ran for the Blackhawks.
