If you take a look at the Division 5 girls’ soccer poll you won’t see the name Cathedral City. You can scan all 10 teams and the Lions aren’t there.
Well guess what? There are eight teams still alive in Division 5 and the Lions are one of them. The never-say-die Lions trailed 3-1 on the road against Montclair on Tuesday, only to roar back for a 4-3 victory.
The Lions, who beat the No. 6 team in the poll, Ocean View, in the previous round will now host the No. 3 team in the poll, Oxnard, on Thursday.
In Wednesday’s remarkable win, it was Azaela Guanjuato and Alinah Espinoza each tallying two goals.
La Quinta 1, Calvary Chapel Santa Ana 0: The DVL champions kept their postseason run going with a nice defensive effort in a road win against the ninth-ranked team in Division 5.
The Blackhawks, ranked No. 7 themselves, will host the No. 2 team in the division, La Serna, on Thursday with a semifinal bid on the line.
Bonita 74, Palm Desert 47: The Aztecs fine postseason run came to an end in the quarterfinals against a sixth-ranked Bonita squad on the road.
Alex McGrath led the Aztecs with 15 points, while Gabe Martinez had 11 and Will Struthers 10. The Aztecs end their season with a 20-9 record and a second-place finish in the Desert Valley League.
Beverly Hills 50, Palm Springs 40: The DVL champion Indians saw their nice season come to an end against a tough road opponent, as they fell by 10 to the No. 3 team in Division 3A.
Palm Springs 11, Beaumont 7: The Indians picked up their second win of the young season behind a sweep from singles player Michael Cabacungan (6-2, 6-0, 6-0).
Marcelo Calixto (6-1) and Miguel Lopez (6-3) each added singles wins. In doubles, the team of Will Donovan and Cameron Koehler swept to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 win. Riley Barnett and Gibby Campbell won twice (7-5, 6-0) and Ben Goehring and Julio Bojorquez one once (6-4).
The Indians (2-0) play at Rancho Mirage on Wednesday.
Rancho Mirage 14, Cathedral City 4: The Rattlers dominated this match in singles, with Daniel Whelan and Ismael Cuevas winning three sets each and Luis Velazquez adding two.
In doubles, it was Marco Giron and Javier Campos and Alex Arias and Juan Felix each won twice. Picking up one set win each were Ivan Chang-Hernandez and Steve Martinez and Jake Orta and Tanner Williams.
For Cathedral City, Mark Vogt picked up a singles win and the doubles team of Batoon and Camacho nabbed a win.
