The first CIF-SS high school football polls were released Tuesday and it’s already clear that the new divisions are going to take some getting used to.
There are 13 divisions divided not by size but by the team’s success in the previous two seasons.
Three valley teams appeared in the preseason polls.
Palm Desert, a team replacing 21 of 22 starters, is ranked No. 4 in Division 9. The Coachella Valley Arabs are ranked No. 9 in Division 11, another familiar team in the Division 11 poll is De Anza cohort Twentynine Palms which is ranked No. 7. Rancho Mirage is ranked No. 4 in Division 12.
Xavier Prep 3, Bonita 0: The Saints kicked off their season with an exciting victory over Bonita at home Tuesday. Xavier Prep won in three-straight, but by the scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
Cassidy Hill set the tables with 19 assists, five digs and three aces. Jillian Whitcomb added eight kills, three aces and three digs. Jenna Braun added nine kills and 12 digs. Anissa Batista had 12 digs and two aces, while Nicole Malette had seven kills and five digs.
Cathedral City def. Desert Hot Springs: The Lions opened their campaign with a road victory at Desert Hot Springs. No other info was reported.
Queens of the Court: Four desert volleyball teams got a good look at the competition over the weekend by participating in the 64-team Queens of the Court Tournament in Anaheim.
Palm Desert led the desert group finishing in a tie for fifth at the prestigious event. La Quinta finished in a tie for 21st, Palm Springs tied for 45th and Shadow Hills was alone in 49th.
