The Fort Collins and Fossil Ridge High School boys soccer teams both kept their seasons alive and advanced to the second round of the playoffs with nail-biting victories on Thursday.
FOSSIL RIDGE 2, CHERRY CREEK 1 — The No. 30 seeded SaberCats pulled off an enormous upset with a heart-stopping 2-1 win in sudden death overtime over No. 3 Cherry Creek. Fossil Ridge fell behind 1-0 at halftime but would knot the game up at one early in the second half on an unassisted free kick from Matt Wilhelm, who kicked it from roughly midfield before it trickled past the keeper. After scoreless play the rest of the second half, it went to sudden death overtime. About five minutes into the overtime period, Grant Martinez received the ball after a throw-in from Blair Durand and tapped it over to Tyler Haus. Haus then buried the game-winner on a shot to the far post, clinching the upset and sending the SaberCats into a second round match up at No. 14 Lincoln on Wednesday.
FORT COLLINS 0, LAKEWOOD 0 — After a 0-0 tie followed by overtime, the No. 8 Lambkins survived a first-round scare from No. 25 Lakewood, prevailing by winning 4-3 in penalty kicks. Fort Collins will host No. 9 Pine Creek in second round action on Wednesday.
WINDSOR 35, SKYLINE 27 — Windsor (6-3, 3-1 Northern) took down Skyline on the road in what turned out to be a roller-coaster of a game. The Wizards fell behind 13-0 in the first quarter before rallying to score 35 unanswered points. Quarterback Brad Peeples found Brayden Pedersen on a 40-yard touchdown pass to put Windsor ahead 14-13. A Jake Hammond interception return for a touchdown cushioned the Wizard advantage to 21-13 and Windsor took a 28-13 lead into halftime. The Wizards got another score on a quarterback keeper from Peeples in the third quarter before Skyline stormed back with 14 fourth quarter points to make it interesting, but Windsor was able to hold on in the waning moments to move to 3-1 in conference play.
