The Indio High School girls’ basketball team continued its dominating roll through the Desert Valley League, staying unbeaten in league play with a convincing 52-18 win over Cathedral City on Tuesday night.
The stat-stuffing Jazmyne Santiel had 22 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals for the Rajahs. D’Neesya Baxter controlled the lane with 10 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks. Mounia Mkadmi had six points, four rebounds and four steals. Eva Rodriguez contributed 11 rebounds and five steals.
The bench came to play as well, as Ariana Lopez had six points and Jullissa Garza had five points.
Indio (11-11, 8-0) plays at La Quinta on Thursday.
Palm Springs 46, Palm Desert 22: The Indians controlled the paint and the game in this road win. Joana Adams had a huge night with 19 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four blocks. Sierra Leonard-Martinez added 17 points and six steals in the win. Jemmel Ahorro, Dajae Session and Ana Reagins played strong defense. Reagins had nine rebounds and five blocks.
Palm Springs (12-7, 7-1) is off until playing at Xavier Prep on Tuesday.
For the Aztecs in the loss, Seline Schinke had 14 points and Alyssa Velasquez added six.
Desert Christian Academy 56, Desert Chapel 28: Abby Wagner had 23 points and eight steals to lead the Conquerors.
Kaylee Espinoza chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds to help the Conquerors sweep the season series from their in-valley rivals.
Indio 72, Cathedral City 66: The scoring hero for the Rajahs on this night was Christian Briceno with 29 points including a whopping eight 3-pointers. William Thigpen added 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, and Phillip Thigpen had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Rajahs (10-12, 4-3) host La Quinta on Thursday.
Xavier Prep 63, Coachella Valley 54: Ethan Sontz had a fantastic night with 28 points and five assists, while Jordan Glassman had a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Saints.
Jah Strange added seven points for Xavier Prep which went 16 of 19 from the free throw line and had 18 assists on 22 baskets.
The Saints (13-8, 5-3) hosts Palm Desert on Thursday.
Desert Christian Academy 80, Desert Chapel 36: The Conquerors collected another league victory, behind Ananias Bullock with 23 points and Kelvin Wong with 20 points.
Ben Roethler had 10 points, Zach Devane had 10 rebounds and five assists and Derrick Rodriguez sparked the defensive effort.
For Desert Chapel, Nico Garcia had 15 points and Kaleb Whan added 11 points.
Palm Desert 1, Palm Springs 1: A game tied 0-0 after regulation saw both teams score once in overtime for an unusual type of tie.
Leonardo Garcia-Guerra scored first for Palm Desert off of an assist by Christian Coralles. The Indians got the equalizer on a corner kick with less than a minute left in the second overtime to forge the dramatic tie.
The Aztecs’ back four of Josmar Flores, Josh Phillips, Sebastian Gomez and Gavin Kirk stood strong the entire match. Palm Desert (7-8-2, 4-2-1) plays at Xavier Prep on Thursday.
Indio 2, Cathedral City 1: The Rajahs picked up a DVL win, no other information was reported.
Desert Christian Academy 6, Redlands Adventist 0: Scott Jones and Jacob Hushaw each scored twice for the Conquerors in another league win.
Cade Burt had a goal and an assist. David Miller had a goal and Casey Harrell had three assists. Jake Bazua, and Davis Jensen added assists.
The Conquerors (10-8-1, 6-0) play Desert Chapel on Wednesday.
Palm Desert 9, Palm Springs 0: From start to finish, the Aztecs controlled this one, as Madison Cosgrove opened the scoring onslaught two minutes into the game.
Afton Kalkoske and Mariana Moreno both had two goals and two assists. Cosgrove finished the night with two goals and an assist. Jorgelina Morales, Kaitlin Clapinski and Dessa Keuilian each added goals, while Elvia Pena and Kelsey Warfield had assists.
Goalkeeper Alex Fabela earned the shutout making one save as the Aztecs outshot the Indians 17-1. Palm Desert hosts Xavier Prep on Thursday.
Coachella Valley 5, Xavier Prep 3 (OT): The Arabs pulled out a dramatic win as Adrianna Moreno tied the game in the 75th minute and then scored the first goal four minutes into overtime to spark the Coachella Valley comeback.
Mmaria Godinez also had two goals and Leslie Morales had a goal and an assist.
Coachella Valley (15-4-1, 5-3) plays at Cathedral City on Thursday.
Girls’ water polo
Palm Desert 11, Palm Springs 7: Eight different players scored for the Aztecs in this league win. Megan Sawyer led the way with thee goals and Samantha Stein scored twice.
Elise Stein, Sarah Nichols, Alissa Clyde, Shanna Heller, Cassie Bija and Judy Morrow also scored. Goalies Abree McCabe and Savannah Clyde recorded four and three saves respectively.
California Winter League
Tuesday’s results from the California Winter League:
Alberta 4, Toronto 2: Closer Aaron Plunkett got the final four outs, striking out three to preserve the win.
Canada 6, Bay Area 2: Canada sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth inning and scored five runs to pull out the win.
Palm Desert 4, British Columbia 1: Andrew Lowe pitched a complete game to earn the victory yielding only a home run to Bobby Webb.
Palm Springs 4, Coachella Valley 2: The Chill got its first win of the year, leaving the Snowbirds as the only winless team.
Washington 1, Midwest 0: Pitchers Brandon Boyle and Kevin Nutley combined to throw seven innings of shutout baseball in the win.
