The La Quinta boys’ basketball team opened a big early lead and held on for dear life to pick up a crucial road victory in the Desert Valley League race.
The Blackhawks topped rival Palm Desert 61-58 and were paced by Marcelo Zepeda with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Pierce Sterling had 16 points and Jesse Gonzalez had 12 points.
For the Aztecs, Alex McGrath led the way with 23 points, eight rebounds, six steals, three assists and three blocks. Will Struthers added 13 points, and Dalton Casserly-Simmons had nine points and six rebounds.
The Blackhawks (8-7, 4-1) host Cathedral City on Thursday. Palm Desert is 12-7 overall and 4-2 in DVL play.
Indio 73, Coachella Valley 68 (OT): Trailing by two with one second left, Indio’s William Thigpen was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. He made two of three to force overtime, then hit a crucial 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in overtime to seal the win.
Thigpen had a huge night with 31 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Jeremiah Brown added 17 points.
Indio (9-11, 3-2) hosts Xavier Prep on Thursday.
Palm Springs 70, Cathedral City 40: The Indians clamped down on defense, leading 39-11 at the half, to spark an easy DVL win. The Indians also hit 14 3-pointers, and 11 of 13 players scored.
Desert Christian Academy 54, Mesa 31: The Conquerors picked up a convincing victory in this league game.
Palm Springs 53, Cathedral City 26: The Indians rebounded after their first league loss with an impressive league win. Joana Adams led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds for Palm Springs. Ana Reagins contributed a season-best 15-point, 15-rebound night. Sierra Leonard-Martinez had nine points, five assists and five steals, and Dajae Session, Jemmel Ahorro and Tzipporah Page played tough defense.
Palm Springs (10-7, 5-1) plays at Coachella Valley on Thursday.
Indio 64, Coachella Valley 35: Another all-world night for Jazmyne Santiel with 28 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals sparked the Rajahs past their rivals.
D’Neesya Baxter had 18 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Mounia Mkadmi had eight assists and four steals. Ariana Lopez added six points of the bench.
The Rajahs (8-11, 5-0) play Thursday at Xavier Prep.
La Quinta 44, Palm Desert 30: The Blackhawks were paced by Ari Soto with 17 points to pick up a DVL victory. Hilary Alvarez added nine points for La Quinta.
For the Aztecs, Seline Schinke had a game-high 19 points. Alyssa Velasquez added six points. Palm Desert is 5-12 overall and 0-4 in league.
La Quinta 5, Palm Desert 0: The Blackhawks picked up an impressive league win, rolling past the No. 3-ranked Aztecs, and creating a three-way tie atop the DVL in the process.
Jianna Guerrero scored twice, and Kailee Prescott, Alexis Garcia and Hannah Mendoza also scored for the Blackhawks. Prescott, Guerrero, Reanna Rivera and Devyn Utter added assists.
The Blackhawks (7-5-6, 4-1) play at Cathedral City, the only DVL team to beat them, on Thursday. Palm Desert (12-3-1, 4-1) is off until playing a make-up game on Saturday at Xavier prep at 2 p.m.
Coachella Valley 4, Indio 0: The Arabs had four different goal-scorers for a DVL win against their rivals. Leslie Morales, Jessica Flores, Jenny Salcido and Fabiola Corral also scored for Coachella Valley and Brianda Rios added an assist.
The Arabs (13-3-1, 3-2) host Palm Springs on Thursday.
Shadow Hills 4, Desert Mirage 1: The Rams defense held tough for a half, but the high-scoring Knights eventually got rolling for a De Anza League win.
Mason Stansberry scored twice in the second half for Shadow Hills, including one acrobatic volley that had the crowd in awe. She also had two assists. Natalie Navarro and Jackie Rodriguez also scored for Shadow Hills, and Rodriguez added an assists. The Knights outshot the Rams 27-2.
The Knights are now 5-0 in De Anza and host Desert Hot Springs on Friday.
La Quinta 3, Palm Desert 1: Chris Avalos’ two second-half goals sparked the Blackhawks to a key DVL victory. Eduardo Quintero added a first-half goal for La Quinta. Sebastian Ascencio had saves in goal.
La Quinta stays perfect in league play at 5-0 and 9-4-3 overall. The Blackhawks host Cathedral City on Thursday.
Palm Springs 2, Cathedral City 2: Palm Springs’ Giovanni Vallejo scored on a penalty kick and off of an assist from Andrew Macias nine minutes apart to help the Indians earn a DVL tie. Goalkeeper Jayden Thomas had 10 saves for the Indians.
The Indians (2-3-1 DVL) host Coachella Valley on Thursday.
Palm Valley 2, Desert Chapel 1: The Firebirds got a goal from Gavin Li and a second one from Matt Zembo to pull out a big league victory over the Eagles. It’s Palm Valley’s fourth win of the year and they host Desert Christian Academy on Thursday.
Desert Christian Academy 9, Grove 1: The Conquerors overwhelmed the Ravens in this league match.
Jacob Hushaw and Scott Jones both had a hat-trick in the win. Jake Jung added two goals, and David Miller had the other. Assists went to Jones, Cadey Harrell, Cade Burt, Jake Bazua.
The Conquerors (7-8-1, 3-0) play Thursday against Palm Valley.
Girls’ water polo
Xavier Prep 8, Tahquitz 7: The Saints pulled out a narrow non-league victory thanks in large part to Jillian Barbato’s five goals.
Blair Burlingame had two goals, and Ariel Forehand added one. Savannah Jessup had 10 blocks.
