Rancho Mirage High School saw its successful girls’ volleyball season come to an end Thursday with a three-set road loss to Pomona Catholic in the second round of the CIF SS Division 8 playoffs.
The Rattlers, who won their first-ever De Anza League title this season and followed that with the team’s first-ever playoff win in the first round, finish the year at 13-3.
Pomona Catholic won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-16.
Palm Desert falls: In the second round of the Division 4 CIF SS girls’ volleyball playoffs, Palm Desert fell in a tight match on the road to Santa Monica High School.
The Aztecs lost by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 26-24.
Boys’ water polo
La Quinta 21, Indio 0: The Blackhawks completed a 12-0 season in the Desert Valley League with the victory over the Rajahs.
Spencer Lowell, Brayden Smith, and Jeremy Baker each scored four goals to lead La Quinta. Other goal scorers were Jacob Spurgan with three, Billy Cotton with two and Cody Rudisill, Zach Furtado, Adam Jacobson, and Caleb Ingle with one goal each.
La Quinta finishes the regular season 25-4 overall and will now wait to see which team it will play when CIF-SS pairings come out Saturday.
Shadow Hills 19, Palm Springs 5: The Knights finished their Desert Valley League regular season with a road win over the Indians.
Dyland VanBuskirk led Shadow Hills with five goals, while Justin Carbajal had four goals and Shane Reynolds and Jonathan Escoto had two goals each.
Austin Good and Zach Russell had had two goals for Palm Springs.
Shadow Hills (13-11 overall) finishes fourth in the DVL earning them a spot in CIF Southern Section playoffs for the first time since joining the DVL as a freelance team three years ago.
