RICHLAND – High school volleyball is in full swing, as a pair of local schools opened the 2016 season Friday at the 11-team Gull Lake Invitational.
Niles captured the Gold Division title with a win over Schoolcraft in the championship. Gull Lake went 4-1 on the day to tie for third place, while Lakeview finished 3-1 to place fourth. In the Silver Division, Delton Kellogg went 1-3.
ROUNDUP CONTINUES BELOW
The host Blue Devils went 3-0 in pool play with wins over Schoolcraft (25-16, 25-21), Hamilton (25-14, 25-8), South Haven (25-16, 26-24) and defeated Comstock (25-10, 25-9) before losing to Niles in the semifinals (22-25, 20-25). On the day for Gull Lake, Kenzy Corstange had 39 kills and 31 digs; Taylor Ferguson had 54 digs and eight aces; Jenna Burkhardt had 24 kills and five blocks and Lauren Esman had 24 digs, 14 kills and 10 aces.
Lakeview earned pool play wins over Comstock (25-12, 25-13), Niles (25-17, 25-18) and Schoolcraft (27-25, 25-21) before losing in the quarterfinals to Schoolcraft (25-6, 14-25, 11-15). Leading the Spartans were Sidney Schiller with 41 kills, 33 digs; four blocks and 10 aces; Rose Tecumseh with 29 kills,15 digs and five aces; Emma Morey with 108 assists; Karli Kucharczyk with 26 kills and four blocks; Emily Eldridge with eight aces and Samantha Vosburg with 18 digs.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
PORTAGE EARLY BIRD INVITE: Led by Maggie Farrell’s first-place time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds, Lakeview finished atop the 15-team field at the Portage Early Bird Invite.
The Spartans finished with 35 points, besting second-place Hudsonville by 49 points. Scoring for Lakeview in the 273 runner field were Farrell, Logann Haluszka (third, 18:54), Sarah Lyon (eighth, 20:15), Maggie Wood (ninth, 20:30) and Avery Truex (14th, 20:45).
Gull Lake placed seventh with 167 points, led by Makenzie Wank (13th, 20:44); Claire Halpin (29th, 21:32), Helen Foldenauer (31st, 21:38), Grace Foster (46th, 22:36) and Kadie Alpers (48th, 22:39).
St. Philip placed ninth with 289 points. Leading the Fighting Tigers were Ava Strenge (second, 18:42), Madi Elliott (21st, 21:03), Meagan Casterline (74th, 25:10), Irene Hibbard (95th, 28:25) and Lilly Schulz (97th, 28:39).
DURAND INVITE: Marshall won the six-team invitational with 21 points. Leading the Redhawks were Rachel Schoepke (first, 20:48), Abby St. John (second, 23:21), Ava Klein (fourth, 23:45), Camille Davis (sixth, 24:45) and Hannah Delmotte (ninth, 25:03).
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
PORTAGE EARLY BIRD INVITE: Rockford won the 18-team invite with 54 points. Lakeview finished sixth with 179, Marshall placed eighth with 287, Gull Lake was 10th with 295 and St. Philip was 14th with 391.
Pacing the Spartans were Scott Bridges (17th, 17:26), Nate Wiley (33rd, 18:05), Andrew Joslyn (34th, 18:12), Joe Wood (46th, 18:33) and Sage Castleberry (49th, 18:35).
Marshall was led by Calvin Smith (32nd, 17:57), Brett Carlisle (55th, 18:58), Nick Lumsden (56th, 18:59), Drew Deitrich (68th, 19:18) and Emmett Rosenzweig (76th, 19:39).
Gull Lake’s scorers were Jack Millmier (31st, 17:57), Nolan Rowland (50th, 18:39), Zach Zahrt (65th, 19:13), Joel Blackburn (70th, 19:24) and Nate Krawczyk (79th, 19:46).
St. Philip was led by Jack Greenman (40th, 18:16), Kenny Wojick (18:56), Davis Spencer (81st, 19:50), Ben Rutherford (105th, 20:39) and Drew Lantinga (111th, 21:07).
SPARTAN INVITATIONAL: Host Lakeview finished sixth with a team score of 381. Scoring for Lakeview were McKenna Evans (86) and Haley Lesiow (87), Meredith Carpenter (102) and Lauren Helner (106).
Marshall finished seventh with a 383, led by Karlee Malone (93), Lauren Bates (94), Jill Konkle (96) and Natalie Newman (100).
Harper Creek placed 10th with a 408, led by Sydney Leatherman (87), Emilie Cqiakala (105), Emily Vahs (106) and Brittany Honeycutt (110).
PARMA WESTERN INVITE: Coldwater placed fifth out of 19 teams with a team score of 405. The Cardinals were led by Jayla Goodwin (92), Claire Sheppard (96), Hunter Jenkot (107), Molly Smith (110) and Gabriel Boston (116).
JACKSON NORTHWEST INVITE (WED.): The Coldwater B team placed 10th in the 14-team field with a score of 515. Leading the Cardinals were Hunter Jenkot (121), Jena Beckhusen and Elloree Madden (130s), Abigail Coffing (134) and Emma Beckhusen (151).
JENISON QUAD (WED.): Lakeview finished tied for third in the four-team field with eight points. The Spartans’ Shuma Isobe went 3-0 at No. 4 singles to win the flight, while Jay Banerji (No. 1 singles) and Cole Henkel (No. 3 singles) each went 2-1 to finish runner up.
OTSEGO INVITE: Galesburg-Augusta placed third, led by the No. 4 doubles team of Jonah Fleck and Cameron Rupert who finished runner-up.
