Topping the list for the first time in coach Peter Dietz’s 13 seasons as coach is Rush-Henrietta. The Royal Comets, who return eight starters from a team that lost in the sectional quarterfinals, are 4-0. McQuaid (6-0), under first-year coach Nino Pilato, the former Greece Odyssey girls coach, is ranked third and Canandaigua (6-0-1) is No. 5.

World of Inquiry (4-0), the two time defending Section V Class C1 champion, tops the small-school poll for schools in Classes B, C and D.

“For the first time in a number of years we have depth of talent. That has helped us a bunch with our tight schedule as well as in training,” said Dietz, who says R-H hasn’t won a sectional title in 40-plus years.

His 2008 squad was runner-up to Fairport.

Two of R-H’s four wins are against ranked opponents, No. 4 Fairport and No. 8 Honeoye Falls-Lima, and another is a 2-1 victory over 2015 Class AA state tournament semifinalist, Hilton. Senior forward Justen Polk (4 goals, 4 assists) and junior Sam Smyth (3G/2A) have led the attack along with senior midfielder Evan Neighbour, who had a goal and assist in the season-opening 2-0 win over HF-L.

Smyth and Polk each had a goal and assist in a 3-2 overtime win over Fairport and Polk had a pair of goals, both in OT, in the Hilton triumph. The Royal Comets scored all five of their goals in the first half in a 5-3 rout of Gates Chili on Tuesday. They host Victor (2-3) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Their next matchup against a ranked foe is Wednesday at home against No. 6 Webster Thomas (3-1-1).
