A San Diego-area girls basketball coach entering his first season was dismissed just days before his official head coaching debut after money from a recent team fundraiser disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
As reported by San Diego NBC affiliate KNSD, Eddie La Salle was fired from his position at Hilltop High in Chula Vista after preliminary investigation raised concerns about the whereabouts of funds raised at a recent fundraiser.
While the district has refused official comment on La Salle’s ouster, the coach himself reportedly texted with a parent and admitted that the disappearance of funds raised by student athletes and parents was behind his dismissal.
According to KNSD, Chula Vista School District officials will report their initial concerns and findings to the Chula Vista Police Department, which is expected to launch a more thorough investigation into La Salle and the program’s missing funds. In the meantime, Hilltop is left with scant time to identify and transition to a new head coach.
