Riding late-season momentum, Santa Margarita (Calif.) dominated the CIF Southern California Regional Division I final and ended the season as the No. 1 team in the USA TODAY High School Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association of America final Super 25 rankings for winter girls soccer.
Santa Margarita had been No. 2 in the last rankings of the regular season.
“In this particular year it was interesting in that Texas had been at the top of the rankings most of the year, but they had some upsets so we went with the California team, which was 25-4,” said Bill Eissele, who chairs the rankings committee for the winter. “Their record was better than Flower Mounds’ 16-3, even though Flower Mound won the state championship.”
Seven states play winter soccer – Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas – with Texas completing its state championships last weekend.
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) won its fourth consecutive Florida state 3A title and finishes at No. 2.
Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) and Highland Park (Dallas) jumped into the final rankings at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Flower Mound won the Texas 6A title in a shootout against Highland Park after playing to a 1-1 tie.
Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) finished at No. 5.
