Webster Schroeder’s “Warrior Crew” is among three finalists in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s third annual “Battle of the Fans” contest.
The other finalists are a pair of schools from Section III (Syracuse area): Cicero-North Syracuse and Skaneateles. Nine schools submitted videos for the contest, which crowned Norwich (Section IV) and Bethlehem (II) as past champions. Skaneateles is a third-time finalist but smallest of the three schools with an enrollment of 517. C-NS (2,759) and Schroeder (1,351) are much larger. As part of the process, NYSPHSAA officials visited basketball games at all three schools. They came to Schroeder for its Jan. 25 matchup with Irondequoit.
The winner will be announced Feb. 12 at noon and be determined via voting on social media networks from 9 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, to next Friday, February 12, at 9 a.m. NYSPHSAA social networks are:
The criteria for judges is as follows, according to the NYSPHSAA: Positive sportsmanship, student body participation, school spirit, originality of cheers, group’s organization, student section leadership, overall impression and fun.
“If we won Battle of the Fans that would mean a ton to the school I feel like it would mean a lot to the town as well,” Schroeder senior and Warrior Crew member Patrick Donnelly says in a YouTube video produced by the NYSPHSAA. “Section V recognizes us a big student section. We come to a lot of games, away games, too.”
