The Section 1 girls golf team is off to a fast start Saturday on the first day of the NYSPHSAA tournament at Bethpage State Park Yellow in Farmington.
The reigning state team champion has six of the top 20 scores after the first round.
“Boy, we did spectacular,” Section 1 coordinator George Kunzmann said. “We have four of the top five scores with Lauren Peter leading the way. All the girls played with such good confidence, were relaxed and had confidence. They played great.”
Peter, the two-time reigning Section 1 champion, shot a 69 in the first round and sits in first place. She finished as runner-up by one shot at states last year.
“It’s another year of experience under her belt,” Kunzmann said. “In practice, she’s very focused. I think she’s mentally tougher. She’s fantastic. She’s constantly working on her game.”
Three other members of the Section 1 team are in the top six, including Ursuline’s Alice Hodge (71, third) and Scarsdale’s Kaitlyn Lee and Ursuline’s Caroline Hodge, who are in a four-way tie for fifth after shooting 74s.
Weather could play a factor on Sunday for the final round. As Kunzmann explained, since it will be a shotgun start, if no one plays a full 18 holes in the finals, the tournament will be only an 18-hole tournament.
“If we don’t get 18 the round doesn’t count,” Kunzmann said. “It’s a problem but we’re glad to be in first place now. I think we feel pretty strong. We feel pretty confident the girls have been playing great and I don’t see that changing.”
After round one, Carmel’s Caitlyn Tully and Byram Hills’ Ally Steffen are tied for 19th. Edgemont’s Vienna Chiu is tied for 25th, Yorktown’s Nicole Triano is tied for 29th and Carmel’s Amanda Tully is tied for 38th.
