BRANDON – The most exciting finish at Brandon Valley’s Tuesday track meet may have come in the 300-meter hurdles, where O’Gorman’s Luke Fritsch, a senior, staved off Washington freshman Nate Freese.

Fritsch held a slight edge around the bend of the last and into the final 100 meters, but Freese pumped his arms and legs furiously to push the pace.

“Coming around the last curve we were about neck-and-neck,” Fritsch said, “and I had kind of gained on him a little bit and thought I was ahead there. But after the sixth hurdle he crept back. I sensed his presence right there, and at that moment I knew it was anyone’s race.”

The future Augustana defensive back leaned on technique for the last hurdle. It came as smoothly as the first and he finished in 40.7 seconds, while Freese clocked in officially at 41.1, though it looked even closer than that to the naked eye.

Track Notebook: Cold wind, ailing metro stars and Warrior hurdlers

“He pushed me, and I think I pushed him a lot as well,” Fritsch said. “I think it just came down to that last hurdle technique.”

It was another strong day for Fritsch, who finished second in the long jump (19 feet, 11 inches) and won a triple jump title (43-0.75). Going in, the hurdles presented the top challenge — particularly with Washington’s Freese in the picture.

“He’s the kind of athlete you want in track,” said O’Gorman coach Doug Lindner. “He’s a high-profile kid in other sports who comes out and treats this like it’s his main activity. Now, sometimes you get kids come out and it makes them better at what else they’re doing — which is OK. But you know you’ve really reached them then they’re treating it like, ‘This is my thing.’ And that’s how Luke treats everything.”

Fritsch’s athletic body of work is one that an athlete like Freese could aspire to. As an impact freshman in track and field and a talented football player, his future looks bright.

“It’s really rare that a freshman boy contributes,” said Coach Everett Gebhardt. “They might be pretty good, but come state meet time you don’t see them very often.”

Gebhard doesn’t believe that’s the case for Freese. The only issue is where to put him. Freese competes in both hurdle events, has eclipsed 20 feet in the long jump, he pole vaults, and he’s proved a reliable sprint relay member as well. The fact that he’s in his first year of high school doesn’t seem to be an issue.

“He’s such a competitor and the other guys see that in him. ‘Look at that freshman — he’s getting after it,’” Gebhardt said. “He’s kind of like your perfect kid to coach. He’s quiet, he does what he’s supposed to do, and he’s competitive as hell.”

Fritsch is described in similar ways. If Freese ends up playing quarterback in the fall, the comparisons might ramp up even further. Sprinkle in Rapid City’s Bennett Fiero and the fireworks are there for a great event at state.

O’Gorman’s Dodi Makwinja earned a 100-meter dash title (11.1 seconds) and anchored a huge come-from-behind win in the 400 relay. Tiegen Lindner won the 3,200, which leaves him well positioned in the 800, 1,600 and two-mile as the season progresses. He also helped the 3,200-relay team cruise to a win. In field events, Emma Hertz won the discus with a throw of 120-9 and took bronze in the shot put.

In the girls’ 1,600, Washington’s Kelsi Kearney followed the torrid pace set by Yankton’s Savannah Woods and Brandon’s Courtney Klatt. Kearney finished third (5:22.6) behind Klatt (5:18.4) and Woods (5:13.8). Kearney was much more comfortable in the 800-meter run, which she won in 2:24.8. Sprinter Hayley Christopherson won the 100-meter dash in 12.5 seconds.

(It’s worth nothing that Brandon Valley’s Krista Bickley did not participate in the 100 — she figured heavily into Brandon’s relay teams. The team’s 3:58.6 mark in the 1,600 meter relay is the stuff of state championships.)

Michael Enalls added another 110-meter hurdles title to his resume, and was again pushed by teammate Ty Smith, who finished second.
