Sammy Watson, a rising senior at Rush-Henrietta who won a world youth track and field title last summer, is in contention for another championship this week.
Watson advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 800-meter race Tuesday during the IAAF World Under-20 Championships hosted by Bydgoszcz, Poland. A 2016 MileSplit All-American who ran at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, earlier this month, Watson won her heat in 2 minutes, 7.30 seconds.
The three International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Under-20 or Junior semifinal heats are Wednesday.
The 2016 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester co-Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year won the IAAF World Youth 800 race in Cali, Columbia last summer.
Coaches hired at Edison: Walter Larkin Jr., an Edison graduate entering his second year as principal at the high school, said the school has two former assistants who will run the varsity football team this fall.
Edison also has new track and field and boys volleyball coaches.
Jack Dees and Matthew Sowers will co-coach the Inventors football team. Both were on the staff of James Burns last season. Larry Morales, who has coached varsity baseball at Edison, is the JV football coach.
Patrick Tindal, a special education teacher in the Rochester City School District, moves from Franklin to coach the Edison indoor track teams and the boys outdoor team. Crystal Graham, an Edison graduate like Tindal and Dees, resumes her roles as an assistant coach during both seasons, while Jack Palmeri takes over the outdoor girls team again.
Joe Jackson is the new Edison varsity boys volleyball coach. Jackson, the building’s lead school safety officer, also is the Edison JV boys basketball coach.
Mynderse Academy class: The Mynderse Academy Athletic Hall of Fame announced its 2016 induction class includes four former athletes, an individual acknowledged as a contributor, a coach and the 1993 girls volleyball team.
Peter Wormuth will be recognized for his contributions to high school sports at Mynderse, through the Seneca Falls Community Center, along with the rest of the hall of fame class, 4 p.m. Oct. 9 at New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls.
The athletes to be inducted are: Jane Cook (Class of 1941), Dana Dickson (’78), Steve Ritter (’67) and Terry Shipley (’81). Former tennis coach Michael Marriam, this spring’s All-Greater Rochester boys tennis coach of the year, also is a part of the class.
The 1993 Mynderse girls volleyball team included: Christina Uticone, Veronica Masino, Liz Giovannetti, Katrina Lorenzetti, Daneille Elias, Kathleen Kelsey, Angela Greene, Jodi Campbell Jodi Docteur, Sarah Strussenberg, Colette Watts, Emily Ryan and coach Trisha Brewer.

Baseball camp at East High: Kyle Crandall, East High’s varsity baseball coach, is offering a four-day camp next month with sessions for players entering fifth through seventh grade.
The camp is Aug. 1-4, 2-5 p.m. on the school’s varsity field, $20 per player. The East High gymnasium is a back-up site, used in case of inclement weather. Registration is 2-4 p.m. Thursday inside the East gym.
