Shaler Area girl’s golf is still a new program. Only in its’ 8th season, Coach Samantha Smyers continues to develop girls to become better golfers.
Though they finished the season with two wins and eight losses, Smyers is still very proud of her players and all that they accomplished this season.
“We ended up winning a few section matches which was great. I think the girls really developed their skills. Next year, we should be really competitive. I’m really excited for that,” Smyers said.
However, inexperience was the biggest problem for the Titans. Out of the eight girls on the team, only four had any experience of competitive golf where every stroke counts.
“I’m so proud the girls. A lot of them were very new, while golf is a very tough and intimidating sport to play,” Smyers said.
The team was led by Seniors Bridget Stack and Paige Gillespie. They embraced the opportunity of having teammates who were still developing their skills and learning to play the game.
“It was very nice playing with inexperienced girls. Everyone that had been playing for a while could step in and help the new girls when needed,” Stack said.
Both Stack and Smyers hope the girls on the team continue to play and continue to develop the program.
“I’ve had some of most important experiences and have made lifelong friends because of the game,” Stack said. “Don’t give up after a bad round!”
