If you thought Midland’s two-point lead in the final two minutes was safe against No. 6 DeSoto, you don’t know Shawn Robinson.
The TCU commit again led DeSoto down the field, throwing a 12-yard TD pass to Laviska Shenault with 28 seconds left and then running in the two-point conversion as DeSoto survived a 49-43 victory in a shootout in Texas.
DeSoto answering Midland was the theme of the night.
Midland took the lead at 40-35 on a 15-yard run by Ricky Hubert with 11:52 left in the game. DeSoto answered as Robinson scored on a 3-yard run with 9:39 remaining for a 41-40 lead.
Ignacio Correa then made a 51-yard field goal with 1:53 remainig to give the lead back to Midland at 43-41 before DeSoto’s last drive.
The third quarter belonged more to the defenses as Midland’s Joseph Barron’s fumble recovery for Midland set up a 35-yard TD pass from Anuszkiewicz to Jalen Children and Midland was up 34-28 with 1:39 left. Seconds later, Robinson hit Emmett Perry and DeSoto led for the first time all night, 35-34 with 54 seconds left in the quarter.
Midland had a two-touchdown lead with 3:43 left in the first half when Jackson Anuskiewicz connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Courtney McMaryion.
But DeSoto scored twice to knot the score at 28-28 at halftime. Robinson threw a 37-yard TD pass to Kadarrian Nixon at the 2:08 mark, DeSoto’s defense held on a three-and-out, and Robinson connected with Laviska Shenault on a 14-yard TD with 33 seconds remaining.
In the first half alone, Anuszkiewicz threw for 209 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for another. Robinson threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns and ran 119 yards and two scores.
