The Showband, Drill Team, and Majorettes are forced to find alternatives to prepare for the halftime show

Chartiers Valley Football FieldWith the onset of the school construction, the Showband, Drill Team, and Majorettes have been struggling to find ways to prepare their halftime performance for the school’s football games. The group utilizes as much time as possible for practice including two weeks of band camp before the start of school, every day homeroom and first period practices, and Thursday night practices, but the current stage of construction and lack of support from the school board forces them to find other ways to prepare.

The returfing of the football field during the summer as band camp approached was first to threaten the creation of the halftime performance. It was promised by the school board that the field would be completed in time for the group to use the field for band camp, but when the time came, the band was forced to move to the ill-kept Primary School field. The uneven grass field was marked with inaccurate hash marks and yard lines which are essential to the group’s formations. Band director Mr. Wilson was also forced to rent a portable toilet – with no compensation from the school board – to accommodate the group during the first week of band camp because of the inability to use the Primary School’s facilities. The field was finished in time for the second week of band camp.

Now into the school year with the band room demolished, the music department was relocated to the high school LGI. Despite insufficient space for instruments, uniforms, and hats for nearly 120 students, the band continues to perform each morning for homeroom and first period to put on a show each Friday night. Problems have arose over Thursday night practices though with other extracurricular activities overlapping and forcing the band to return to the Primary School field. Even so, all members of the group continue to work hard and have fun through the complications. Mr. Wilson provides input, stating the construction is “a minor inconvenience” for the group as they are still getting the job done.
