It took a last-second goal for the Silver Creek High School girls soccer team to continue its perfect start to the season.
Heading down to the wire in a 2-2 stalemate with Seymour, Dragons midfielder Alyssa Wright stood over a free kick from around 25 yards out to the right of the box. Wright floated a ball towards Seymour goalkeeper Rachelle Collett, who spilled the free kick in her own six-yard box. Alexis Cook was the first on the scene, and the Dragons senior captain shot and scored to give her team a dramatic 3-2 win in the final minute.
“We were very sluggish to start the game and Seymour came out ready to play,” Dragons head coach Patrick Anderson said. “They were in control of the game the entire first half and put us in a hole early. I challenged our girls at halftime and they responded. We played much better in the second half and looked like a totally different team. Give a lot of credit to Seymour, they played a great game and made us work very hard.
“The game had a great feel to it and we were lucky to get a goal with about 6 seconds left to win. Alexis Cook followed a great save on a free kick by Alyssa Wright from about 25 yards out to score the game winning goal. Our defense played very well to stop Seymour’s attack. They did a great job of attacking us in different ways. I was really pleased with the way we played and turned the game around in the second half.”
With the win, Silver Creek improves to 3-0 on the season, while Seymour drops to 0-2.
