Boys Soccer Preview: Jeffersonville revamps for 2016

Jeffersonville’s 2015 season ended earlier than it expected, with a loss in the sectional final to Floyd Central, its third-straight defeat to the Highlanders at that stage.

This time around, the Red Devils are geared for a deeper run in the Indiana state playoffs.

Jeffersonville lost nearly a dozen athletes to graduation but returns nearly its entire midfield, including senior Evan Petty, junior Kurtis Kimmell and senior forward Leo Puentes, who is expected to pick up the scoring load vacated by Ben Mann. Mann scored 23 goals last season, five of them in the playoffs.

“Preseason was great,” Jeffersonville head coach Carson Webb said. “We are usually one of the most fit teams around and right now they’re about as good as they’ve been in school for the past seven years. They’ve worked hard for the last four to weeks.

“As far as playing, we are moving the ball really well. We’re spreading the field and using every inch of space. We’re playing lots of small sided games to get less touches on the ball and let the ball do the work. I’m happy with how we look in August.”

Another team looking to make a deep run in the state tournament this year is Providence. Under first-year head coach Nathan Marshall, a former standout who led the Pioneers to a semi-state finish in 2006, has his team geared up for another run in Class 1A.

“That’s definitely in the back of our mind,” Marshall said of the playoffs. “That’s one of our team goals, to improve upon our recent success in the state tournament.”

The Pioneers return their top four goal-scorers, including Braden Ranier, who scored four goals in Providence’s 13-1 season opening win against Corydon Central, and senior Conor Van Hook is going to play a holding midfield role this year after playing centerback last season.

“(Conor) should be really sharp for us to solidify the backline,” Marshall said. “Eli Coker, also a center midfielder, is a pretty dynamic player for us. He’s really good on the ball and has good vision. And Braden’s been in pretty good form so far in the preseason and he should have another good year.”

Providence hosts Jeffersonville on Sept. 24, towards the end of the regular season.

Conference: Hoosier Hills, Class 2A, Sectional 28

Coach: Carson Webb

2015 Record: 14-4-0

Outlook: “we take it game by game, very much so, but I think we can beat anybody and if we don’t come out and play we can lose to anybody,” Webb said. “I know it sounds cliche but it’s true. This is my seventh year (coaching). We’ve pretty much always been the same. We have a really good record. I expect the same. Since I’ve been here we’ve won 80 percent of our games. I don’t see that changing.”

Conference: Independent, Class 1A, Sectional 60

Coach: Nathan Marshall

2015 Record: 13-5-3

Outlook: “Once we get a couple of guys back on the field and get them mixed in, hopefully they gel with us well,” Marshall said. “We’ll see where we are when October comes around but this group has a lot of potential. It’s really going to come down to how hard they work everyday and for each other, and the sacrifices they make.”

Floyd Central

Conference: Hoosier Hills, Class 2A, Sectional 28

Coach: Tim Rice

2015 Record: 10-6-4

Outlook: “I have no idea what we are capable of at this point, a lot depends on a talented group of underclassmen and how quickly they get comfortable with the speed of play and the physical nature of high school soccer,” Rice said. “We have a good nucleus of returning players and a really solid group of younger players that, as the season goes on, should mesh together to give us an opportunity to make a run in the postseason. We have a really tough schedule again that will hopefully give us some great experience and force us to grow up quickly.”

Silver Creek

Conference: Mid-Southern, Class 2A, Sectional 28
