Once they got into the flow of the game, the Galena Grizzlies were unstoppable.
By then they were ahead 5-0. Sophomore pitcher Kelli Bangert allowed four hits and struck out five as the Grizzlies downed North Valleys, 12-2, Thursday at Galena to improve to 3-1 in league, 5-4 overall.
Galena led 8-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Grizzlies scored four times in the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Bangert is the only pitcher Galena has, for now. Coach Mike Reid is expecting a few more players back after spring break ends. He had nine players available Thursday.
“We’re doing it with smoke and mirrors and band-aids right now,” Reid said.
Bangert said it takes a little while for her to warm up and get a feel for the game and see how batters are reacting to her.
The Grizzlies pounded out 15 hits. Riley Ward was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs and Devon Casazza was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Shelby Harris, Stephanie Combs and Alyssa Martinez each had two hits.
“We just really got going with our hitting and turned on with our bats,” Casazza said.
North Valleys pitcher Madison Nicholson, also a sophomore like Bangert, had four strikeouts. Bailee Nicholson had an RBI in the fifth to make the score 6-1.
Galena plays a doubleheader at Douglas on Saturday and North Valleys is at Spanish Springs.
Also Thursday, Reed beat Damonte Ranch, 4-1 as Julia Jensen struck out 10 and allowed three hits. Reed improved to 4-0 in league, 9-0 overall.
McQueen beat Hug, 28-0.
In baseball Thursday, Jared Kiessling was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs as Galena beat Desert Hills from Arizona at the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas. Kiessling also pitched and allowed four hits while ringing up 11 strikeouts.
Tom Lichty was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Sami Baig and Andrew West were each 2-for-4.
