Sam Wile didn’t go on a personal vacation this summer.

The Spackenkill High School volleyball team poses on its way to a tournament in Disney World.

The senior outside hitter on Spackenkill High School’s volleyball team was supposed to make college visits, but traveling just didn’t pan out.

Then she reached the end of her summer.

On Wednesday, Wile and the Spartans arrived in Orlando, Florida. They will be participating in the KSA Events Volleyball Classic, which begins Thursday at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Spackenkill is not only looking forward to the competition the tournament will offer, but the opportunity to bond.

“It’s definitely a treat,” Wile said. “When they told us about the trip, I was very excited to go and spend a week in Disney with my team. It’s fun.”

The Spartans have a lot of work in front of them, though.

The first round is round-robin pool play. The second and subsequent rounds are bracketed.

Spackenkill begins pool play at 3 p.m. Thursday against Florida’s Trinity Prep and faces Mary Montgomery from Alabama at 4:45 p.m. and Golden Valley from California at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, the Spartans face a pair of Florida teams, Lake Brantley at 9 a.m. and Palm Bay at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, Spackenkill faces Haverhill (Massachusetts) at 9 a.m., Metro Christian (Oklahoma) at 10:45 a.m. and Leverett’s Chapel (Texas) at 12:30 p.m.

The Spartans play their first game in New York on Sept. 8, when Pine Plains visits.

Facing off with teams from around the country, coach Cassi Diamond said, will benefit her team.

“It’s a good opportunity for us,” Diamond said. “We can kind of see what other teams look like. Do we play the same kind of game? We had the opportunity to get the team out and playing. It’s good for us.”

The Spartans will have ample time to relax and bond as a team, too.

Diamond said the Spartans plan on attending Florida water parks, will see a show at Epcot Center in Disney World and will have breakfast with Disney characters.

“I think they’re all super excited,” Diamond added.
