The St. Clair 10U softball team started the postseason in dominant fashion.

They went up to Croswell-Lexington for the district tournament and came down with the trophy and a berth into the sectional round next Thursday in St. Clair.

The St. Clair squad topped Marysville in the championship game, 11-1, after beating them 7-2 the previous game. They also opened the tournament with a statement, beating Algonac in a 17-0 mercy.

“We outscored our opponents 35-3, and we out-hit them 35-4,” head coach Ron Cook said.

St. Clair had hits from all over in the championship game, led by Hadley Schwarz and her two hits and two RBI. Claire Borg also had a strong game with three RBI, and Ashlyn Zimmer added a bases loaded, base-clearing single for St. Clair.

The game ended with the championship win when Rachelle Schweihofer’s walk-off put the mercy rule into effect.

The team consists of seven nine-year-olds and seven 10-year-olds, which helps the team stay successful year in and year out, said Cook.

“This is one of those teams that’s fun to coach because no one complains about playing time or anything,” Cook said. “They want to be there and they have fun, and they run the bases well and I think the strength of this team is our hitting.”

Another strength was the pitching of Borg, Schwartz and Claire Campbell, who combined for four walks and 32 strikeouts over the three district games while giving up just five hits.
