The Tigers promoted assistant Gil Downs to head coach on Wednesday to replace Kerry Lancaster. Lancaster stepped down this past May after nine seasons as head coach.
Downs had assisted Lancaster for the past seven years, and is a graduate of both St. Xavier and the University of Louisville.
“The Saint Xavier Tennis program has a great track record of both team and individual success,” St. Xavier Athletic Director Alan Donhoff said in a statement. “As an assistant coach for the past seven years, Gil knows the tennis landscape and he knows the kids in our program. I look forward to working with him in a new role as he puts together a team that will continue the excellence of Saint Xavier Tennis.”
Downs will be assisted by Tyler Spears and Don Isaacs. A third assistant coach will be added prior to the 2017 season.
Prior to stepping down, Lancaster coached the Tigers to their eighth consecutive state title, winning the overall team tournament as well as Drew Singerman winning the singles tournament, with Matt Graft and Preston Cameron winning the doubles tournament.
Lancaster recently took a teaching job at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green for the upcoming academic year.
