The final team result of Friday’s All-City Boys Golf Tournament at Riverside Golf Club wasn’t a big surprise, but it was somewhat unexpected to see the name that finished atop the individual leaderboard.
Division 1 10th-ranked Lakeview captured its 13th consecutive All-City title, while Spartan junior James Staab emerged as the individual city champion with a 3-under par 69 – edging teammate and three-time All-City medalist Andrew Walker’s 2-under par 70.
“You goal is not to beat him really, but it was great to win and hopefully I can carry my confidence through on to other tournaments,” Staab said of topping Walker, the two-time reigning ‘Mr. Golf’ Award winner. “I really made a lot of putts and I probably made too many because everything I looked at was going in. That’s just how golf is. It was a lot of fun out there.”
Lakeview finished with a team score of 296, followed by Harper Creek in second with a 337 and Pennfield in third with a 388. St. Philip did not register a team score.
Lakeview coach Tony Evans was especially pleased with the season-best score of 296 coming at the Spartans home course in the final weeks of the season.
“It’s one of the things that we mark on our schedule when we talk about things at the beginning of the year; we want to do well at the city, we want to do well at conference and then we want to play well at the end of the year,” Evans said. “It’s kind of nice with the city being toward the end of the season when we’re really trying to grind down and try to play our best golf. This was our best round all year.”
Joining Staab and Walker on the All-City golf team were Harper Creek junior Alex Johnson (third, 75); Pennfield senior Chase Williamson (fourth, 77); Lakeview senior Bailey Niedzielski (fifth, 78); Lakeview senior Jared Fisk (sixth, 79); Lakeview senior Brendan Stevens (tied for seventh, 84); Harper Creek senior Zac Wilson (tied for seventh, 84); and Harper Creek senior Tanner Brauer (ninth, 88).
The Spartans also received a no-count 91 from senior Parker Bueker.
Harper Creek’s Mason Ernst carded a 90, while teammates Nick Robinson and John Nickolaou had a no-count 92 and 103, respectively.
Scoring for Pennfield were Williamson, Jaydon Butson (100), Joe Romig (105) and Landon Saxton (106), with no-count scores from Andrew Charameda (111) and Nick Staib (131).
St. Philip’s Anthony Schaub shot a 118 and Morgan Bohanan had a 144.
