Centennial overcame a slow start Thursday to beat Reno, 82-53, and advance to Friday’s Division I state championship in girls basketball

Centennial junior Sam Thomas scored 29 points to lead the Bulldogs.

“You get that with games like this. Kids are a little passive, a little timid. Nobody wants to be the first one to make a big play,” Centennial coach Karen Weitz said.

She said the Bulldogs just played their game — tough defense and fast offense.

“If we do what we do well, we’ll be OK, she said.

Reno’s Mallory McGwire had 14 points and 11 rebounds in her last high school game. She will play at Oregon in the fall.

Centennial plays a lot like Bishop Manogue, constantly running and flying around the court, with multiple defenders seemingly on every ball-handler.

The Bulldogs led, 35-25 at halftime and both coaches said their players were tight to start.

It showed early as the Huskies threw the ball out of bounds and dribbled off their feet.

The Bulldogs’ full-court pressure defense confounded the Huskies.

“There’s a reason they’re the No. 5 team in the country,” Foster said. “We were there at half. Our effort was tremendous. There’s times they make you look like you’re a JV team. That’s because they’re relentless. They’re talented. That’s a great basketball team.”

Reno tried to slow down the game, to no avail. The Bulldogs forced turnovers and limited Reno to one shot, maybe, each trip.
