GALLATIN The Station Camp High boys soccer team hasn’t slipped in District 9-AAA play this season, and the Bison had a chance to lock up the top seed in the district tournament as a result.
Two early goals from Bison junior forward Chase Freeman were the difference as Station Camp defeated visiting Gallatin by a 2-0 margin on Friday evening, clinching the regular-season title for the third consecutive season.
Freeman outran Gallatin sophomore Keegan Watson to a loose ball and scored with a shot low and to the right of Green Wave senior goalkeeper Deonte Kensinger just 3:35 into the match.
“The last couple of games, we’ve been working with chemistry, and tonight, it finally got working,” Freeman said. “But we’ve still got work to do, and Coach (Thomas Morand) tells us to keep working hard.
“That was a beautiful ball (from sophomore Atakelti Gebregzabher), a perfect ball.”
Freeman struck again five minutes later, taking an arching pass from Gebregzabher and flicking it in low and into the left side of the net.
Kensinger made two diving saves in the final minutes of the first half to keep the Bison from increasing the lead before halftime.
It was the 10th shutout for the Bison this season.
Station Camp (15-1 overall, 6-0 in District 9-AAA) closes the regular season at Beech on Tuesday, while Gallatin (7-8, 3-2) travels to Portland on Tuesday before hosting Hendersonville on Thursday.
“We’ve got to get (back) to our game plan,” Gallatin head coach Greg Harper said. “I didn’t think we played so well. We’ve got to come back and get ready to play next week.”
