18. ALLEN

Location: Allen, Texas

2015 record: 14-1

2015 Super 25 Final ranking: 20

The Eagles have a new coach in Terry Gambill, who was 68-13 at Midway (Waco) and was an assistant at Allen from 2001 to 2009, most recently as the team’s defensive coordinator. He replaces Tom Westerberg, who won four state titles in his 12 seasons at Allen with a record of 148-17. He is now the coach and athletic director at Babers Hill, outside Houston.

Gambill said he isn’t concerned about the pressure of winning at Allen.

“I was looking forward to the opportunity once I was named,” he said. “Why wouldn’t you want to be at the best place? Where the expectations are high? I would rather be in a place like this than someplace where football was not important. I have a bunch of young players who have my back.”

Allen has one of the top running backs in the state in junior Kirby Bennett (1,251 yards and 11 TDs).

Senior QB Mitchell Jonke (1,903 and 19 TDs passing, 772 yards, 13 TDs rushing) won’t likely share the starting role at quarterback this season as he did last year with Minnesota signee Seth Green, though speedy sophomore Grant Tisdale could also contribute behind center.

POLL: Who should be No. 1 in preseason Super 25 football rankings?

Key targets include senior WRs Tenio Ayeni and Tevyn Stevenson. Now that American Family Insurance ALL-USA offensive tackle Greg Little is at Ole Miss, look for senior Will Sherman (6-3, 290), a Colorado commit, to anchor the Eagles’ offensive line, along with junior Trey Stratford. Sophomores WR Theo Wease and DE Jayden Jernigan should contribute right away.

Allen has tough out-of-state opponents with Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.) and Hoover (Ala.), which will be the first time a non-Texas team plays in the annual Tom Landry Classic.

SCHEDULE:

8/26 vs. Hoover (Hoover, Ala.)
