The Rams have one of the most ambitious schedules in the country and the talent to play it.

Start with DB Deangelo Gibbs, a transfer from Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee), and Jamyest Williams, a transfer from Archer (Lawrenceville), both of whom were invited to Nike’s The Opening Final.

In addition, sophomore LB Owen Pappoe was the youngest player ever invited to The Opening. Another key defender is LB Breon Dixon, a Peachtree Ridge transfer who has committed to Georgia.

“My thought was to be in a program that will prepare you for college,” Dixon said. “I just wanted to go out my senior year with a bang. You’re going to play in 10-11 games anyway. You might as well play for a reason.”

Senior quarterback Chase Brice, a Clemson commit, threw for 2,708 yards and 29 touchdowns last season and will be throwing behind an offensive line anchored by Tony Gray, a transfer from Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville), and Will Taylor, a Duke commit.

Grayson also has a new coach in Jeff Herron, who has won four state titles with Camden County (Kingsland) and Oconee County (Watkinsville) and was coaching at Prince Avenue Christian (Bogart).

Grayson opens its season with a nationally televised game against IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and also will play Deerfield Beach (Fla.), Georgia state playoff teams McEachern (Powder Springs) and Archer and Hoover (Ala.), which has won three state titles in the past four years.

“I was very happy where I was at Prince,” Herron said. “There was a part of me that missed coaching at this level. …

“Between the challenge of the schedule and the opportunity to have the numbers of kids and the talent of the kids they have here and step into a program that was already in good shape, it was kind of a no-brainer to me.”

SCHEDULE:

8/27 vs IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
9/2 @ McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.)
9/16 vs Deerfield Beach (Deerfield Beach, Fla.)
9/23 vs Ramsay (Birmingham, Ala.)
9/30 @ Rockdale County (Conyers, Ga.)
10/7 vs Shiloh (Snellville, Ga.)
10/14 vs Archer (Lawrenceville, Ga.)
10/21 vs Newton (Covington, Ga.)
10/28 @ Hoover (Hoover, Ala.)
11/4 @ South Gwinnett (Snellville, Ga.)
