The Lee County Athletic Conference swim meet turned into yet another big day of victory for Estero High senior Alina Faunce. Only two weeks after committing to swim collegiately, she got back to the business of winning high school meets.
The University of Alabama bound Faunce won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly races for the Wildcats, who easily prevailed in the LCAC meet Monday afternoon at the Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center.
Faunce, who medaled in four different events in the state finals last November,
Faunce had some help in compiling team points from Alyson Currao, who won the 50 freestyle, and Paige Madden’s wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and the Wildcats’ winning 200 medley relay team (1:56.93).
Mikayla Puckett also won the 100 breaststroke for the Wildcats.
“It was nice to see us win all three relays,” said Estero coach Tim Jacobson. “Our seniors, especially Alina and Paige, have stepped up all season long, so it’s exciting to see them do well at the end of the season. Alina and Paige were on two winning relay teams, so they each were quadruple winners.”
Estero also won the 200 freestyle relay.
The Wildcats totaled 499 team points.
Cape Coral finished a distant second with 347. Fort Myers was third with 336 points.
Depsite having a passel of stars, Jacobson and co-coach Chelsea Franklin noted that it was also lesser-known swimmers that also contributed to the Wildcats’ win.
“The middle of the pack swimmers gave us the depth in points that we needed to have,” Jacobson said. “We had consistency from everyone. That’s what won the meet.”
Jacobson and Franklin liked the performances of Makailey Hauser, Jessica Walsh, and Mikayla Puckett, among others.
“I was especially pleased to see the juniors do well,” Franklin said. “Next year, when these seniors now are gone, they’re going to be the ones leading.”
The Seahawks were led by Nicole Jimenez, who won the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
Jorni Northrup of Mariner also won the girls diving division.
Cape Coral won the LCAC boys meet, led by Jack Pellegrino and Jonah Martinez. Pellegrino won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Martinez prevailed in the 50 freestyle and also the 100 breaststroke.
“It was a strong meet for us today,” said Cape Coral coach Dianne Kimble. “It was really impressive to watch the boys swim and see all the effort and the way they came together. It took a lot of work for us to host and prepare for the meet. So to go out and actually win it is pretty cool.”
Cape Coral piled up 513 team points. Fort Myers was in second place with 370.
Cape Coral’s Santi Rosas won the 100 backstroke, and the Seahawks also won the 200 medley relay (1:42.39).
“We did well in the relays, so those were fun to watch,” Kimble said. “It was great to watch the 200 individual medley and to see Steven (Rua) and Jack (Pellegrino) compete against each other. We’re really excited about the districts coming up. I’d like to see us get a little faster before then, and see us get off the blocks better. Until then, we have to clean some things up and hope for a great day of swimming in the district.”
Clay Riemenschneider of Fort Myers High won the 200 and 500 freestyle. Riemenschneider’s teammate Matt Lucker also won the 100 freestyle for the Green Wave.
