Team Canada defeated team Europe by a final score of 2-1 in Canada’s comeback thriller late in the third period after trailing 1-0 the majority of the game. Team Canada rallied late in the third period on a goal by Sidney Crosby with just about three minutes left in the game to tie the game at one. Then with about a minute left, Team Canada defensemen Drew Doughty took a penalty and Canada had to play shorthanded the remainder of regulation. However that didn’t stop them from building up the momentum and feeding off the energy of the fans. Brad Marchand would score a shorthanded goal giving team Canada a 2-1 lead with just over 30 seconds remaining in the game. Canada would go on to win the game 2-1 and complete their victory for the World Cup. Students from Chartiers Valley High School were interviewed on their thoughts about the game.
Brandon Marcucci, (grade 12) “I think Canada deserved the win for sure. Sidney Crosby is a prime reason why they won, he was very helpful by leading the team and creating offensive opportunities and that showed by the amount of assists that he had throughout the World Cup”.
Sean McCrerey, (grade 12) “It was a good series and I’m glad Canada won because Sidney Crosby is the best player in the world. He has now won every award he could possibly win when it comes to hockey, and a player of his caliber deserves it.”
The win marks Canada’s 16th straight win as a hockey club dating back to 2014. With the NHL regular season just around the corner, this game was an exciting one to watch.
