The USA Basketball’s Women’s U17 team used a 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter to beat Italy 59-55 and earn the No. 1 seed in Group C at the FIBA U17 World Championship in  Zaragoza, Spain.

The Americans will play Brazil, the No. 4 seed in Group D, in the Round of 16 on Monday.

Team USA had a 41-40 lead entering the final quarter after trailing for much of the game.

Christyn Williams (Central Arkansas Christian/Little Rock, Ark.) started the run with a three-pointer, followed by a three from Sedona Prince (Liberty Hill, Texas) and six straight points from Aquira DeCosta (St. Mary’s/Stockton, Calif.).

Williams had a game-high 20 points. DeCosta scored 10 of her 12 in the final quarter.

“In the fourth quarter, we gained the momentum,” Williams said. “That really helped us get the win.”

Olivia Nelson-Ododa (Winder-Barrow/Winder, Ga.) had 16 rebounds and DeCosta added 12 boards.
