The Damon Harge Jr. Blog: Getting back to the old Damon, boarding school life and more

Christ School’s (Arden, N.C.) Damon Harge Jr. is one of the most well-known high school basketball players on YouTube with more than 15 million views on his highlight videos; and it’s been that way since he was 11. Harge, one of the top point guards in the 2018 class, helped Orlando Christian Prep (Orlando, Fla.) win a state title as an eighth grader and holds offers from high major schools. Now he’s agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from his recruitment to his everyday life in a blog.

What’s up world, it’s Damon Harge back with my sixth blog!

Right now we’re 5-2; we took the losses early, but we’ve bounced back since then. We’re taking a little while to get adjusted to each other, but I think we’re starting to gel.

It’s a whole new role for me this year; since the eighth grade my coaches that I’ve had have been telling me that they want me to be a true point guard and to pass, pass, pass!

This year my coach wants me to score, score, score; which is what I have always done best ever since I started playing. That’s how I got my name and all the YouTube views and everything.

I was always a scorer and that’s where I’m most comfortable, but for the last three years I’ve been retraining my mind to be a playmaker who sets other guys up.

It’s kinda weird to have to adjust back to being a scorer, but I’m getting there more and more each game. It’s all mental.

I just need a breakout game and I’ll be fine. That’ll help me for AAU too.

Now when I’m coming down I’m looking to attack or use the pick-and-roll; it’s all coming back to me now.

I’m just getting back into attack mode.

I’m getting back to being the Damon Harge that everyone knows; it’s a process.

On the recruiting side, I would say that Arizona State has been keeping in touch with me the most. They haven’t offered yet, but they’re very interested and they want to come out and see me play more.

Of course I’m hoping to pick up more interest from different colleges; I just have to get my old mentality back and get it done. It just needs to click for me.

I believe it will soon.

We play Wesleyan Christian on Friday and that’s a big game that we’re looking forward to because they’re No. 19 in the Super 25. This is a big opportunity for us to gain a lot of confidence so we’re focusing on this one.

OK, so school is going pretty good for me this year. It’s a lot tougher, but I’ve been staying on top of everything.

It’s different here because most of the kids here live close so almost everyone is gone on the weekends. The cool thing is that the school is good about having things for the students who stay here on the weekends to do.

I’ve definitely had to grow up a lot more being on my own. The biggest thing I’ve had to learn is to keep up with my grades and to stay in touch with the teachers.

It’s basically college life, but it’s preparing me for the next level.

On the music side I’ve just been getting back to my roots listening to a lot of Future. That’s about it.

OK everybody thanks again for reading my blog and check back soon for my next one.
