GAME OF THE WEEK

Hillsboro (7-4) at Independence (11-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Hillsboro will need to take better care of the football to have a shot at taking down Independence, which is riding a state-leading 26-game winning streak. The Burros, winners of five in a row, lost two of their three fumbles and threw an interception in their 41-7 opening-round win against overmatched Stewarts Creek. That won’t be good enough against the defending Class 5A state champion Eagles.

The pick: Independence 28, Hillsboro 14

Goodpasture running back Jermaine Mason (left) and Fairview running back Jake Beathard (right)

Goodpasture (9-2) at Fairview (11-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Goodpasture’s Jermaine Mason had 273 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns in last week’s 36-20 win over Harpeth. Fairview’s Jake Beathard, who is coming off a 144-yard, two-touchdown effort, has rushed for 1,186 yards and 18 scores.

The pick: Goodpasture 27, Fairview 21

CPA (5-6) at Stratford (11-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Friday will mark the fourth time that these Region 5-3A foes have faced off in the past two seasons, including Stratford’s 7-6 win on Sept. 30 over CPA. Stratford, led by Mr. Football semifinalist T.J. Carter, can secure its first trip to the quarterfinals since 2003. CPA needs a win to avoid its first sub-.500 season since 2010.

The pick: Stratford 13, CPA 10

Beech (8-3) at Cane Ridge (11-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Cane Ridge needed a strong second-half performance to avoid an opening-round upset to Summit, reeling off five-unanswered scores to secure the 8-year-old school’s first playoff victory. Beech, coming off a two-touchdown win over Shelbyville, will be looking to avenge a 17-16 Week 5 loss in which the Ravens stuffed the Buccaneers’ potential game-winning two-point try.

The pick: Cane Ridge 14, Beech 12

Science Hill (8-3) at Oakland (11-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Oakland appears destined for a semifinal showdown with East Tennessee powerhouse Maryville, but the Patriots still have a few more tests before that potential battle of unbeatens. Science Hill, which has won five in a row, is coming off an impressive 48-0 win over Siegel. Oakland, however, hasn’t allowed a team to score double digits in over two months.

The pick: Oakland 42, Science Hill 10

Mt. Juliet quarterback Mason Earls (left) and Ravenwood quarterback McCain Marrow (right)

Ravenwood (6-5) at Mt. Juliet (9-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

In addition to clinching its first quarterfinal appearance since 2012, Mt. Juliet can also avenge one of its two losses. The Region 3-6A champion Golden Bears have strung together eight straight wins since suffering a 12-7 loss on Sept. 2 to the defending Class 6A champion Raptors.

The pick: Mt. Juliet 28, Ravenwood 17

Mr. Football semifinalist Cole Copeland and Bradley Central squeaked out a 29-25 win over Cookeville. Region 2-6A runner-up Blackman extended its winning streak to seven with a 41-12 win over Jefferson County. Blaze running back Master Teague, who is coming off a 325-yard, three-touchdown performance, has rushed for 1,591 yards and 16 touchdowns in nine games.

The pick: Maplewood 21, Springfield 14

Giles County quarterback John Bachus (left) and Marshall County quarterback Bryce Wallace (right)

The pick: Marshall Co. 42, Giles Co. 17

Page quarterback Jacob Van Landingham (6).
