Trae Young is one of the most dynamic and electrifying scorers in the country, regardless of class, pumping in 35.4 points and handing out 8.2 assists per game for Norman North (Norman, Okla.) this past season. Young, a rising senior who is ranked No. 21 overall in the ESPN 100, has been plenty dominant on the Nike EYBL this summer despite playing alongside No. 4 overall junior Michael Porter Jr. with Mokan Elite. Young is being pursued by everyone from Kansas to Oklahoma to Stanford to Kentucky to Texas, among many others. He’s agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a blog.
Hey what’s up world!
I’ve got some big news to kick off this blog so here goes: I’ve decide to stay at Norman North High School next season! I won’t be leaving for a prep school!
I know a lot of people had been wondering about this, especially here in Norman, and, truthfully, it was a tough decision, but I’ve decided to finish my high school career right here at home!
Coach Boyle and Coach Ray from Montverde were recruiting me really hard, so was Coach Johnson from Findlay Prep and it was tough because I know that I would’ve been pushed every day by great players and great coaches. The preparation for the next level would’ve been great at those schools and it was hard to say no to that, but after talking it over with my family I felt that it was the best for me to stick around here.

I definitely thought about the fact that I’d be leaving for college next year so it was big for me to be able to be here with my family that extra year to see my little brother’s basketball games and my sister’s volleyball games and just spending time with my family was important to me.
I wanted to go ahead and put this news out now because there’s a lot bigger news that the people here in Oklahoma want to know about this summer with KD!
I do want to say that this in no way affects my recruitment, it’s just about where I’m playing my senior year.
OK, now that we’ve got that out of the way I can talk hoops!
They EYBL regular season is over and I’m feeling good about where we are right now.
We made Peach Jam and we’re at the top of our division and one of the top teams in the league. I think we’re definitely a favorite to win Peach Jam.
I feel like I played well this season; some games were better than others, but I’m happy with how I played. Of course I play with a future pro in Michael Porter and a bunch of other talented players and I feel like they made me look good all summer.
I think the most fun game this regular game was the game against Team Penny. The atmosphere was ridiculous! Definitely a Peach Jam-like atmosphere!
It was fun competing against my man P.J. (Washington); we came up a little short, but it was a fun game!
I had a great time at the Pangos All-American Camp last weekend too! It’s always fun to get out there and compete against great players.
I’m getting ready for USA Basketball tryouts next week and I’m really excited about that!
I know it’ll be hard, but I’m looking forward to getting out there and competing. Just having the opportunity to wear that USA across my chest will be one of the best experiences I’ve ever had so I’m looking forward to that.
I’ve got CP3 Camp later this month too and just to be able to learn from one of the best point guards in the game is definitely something I’m looking forward to!
I had put my recruitment on hold for the EYBL regular season, but now things are picking back up for me. I’m starting to look at cutting my list here soon.
Of course everyone wants to know about Mike (Porter) and I’s plans on our package deal and it’s still on. Mike released his final five schools and we talked about it before he released it. Those are the best schools for him and I respect that.
It’s funny because people are assuming that it’s all over and we’re a done deal to Washington because his dad got the assistant job at Washington. I know that Mike is looking at other schools just as hard and Washington was recruiting me really hard before his dad got the job there.
The truth is neither one of us know what we’re gonna do, but I know our plan is still to try and play together in college.
Coach Calipari has made me a priority with how often he stays in touch with me, also Coach Kruger and I talk quite a bit, Coach Smart has been in contact with me a lot, Coach Self and I talk a lot and Coach Romar too.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to get any visits in this summer with everything I’ve got going on, but I’m looking at the fall as the time I’ll be able to get my visits in.
Being out for the summer is great; different but great.
I’m just so used to waking up super early and going to class then going to practices and workouts, but I’m enjoying my summer so far.
OK, stepping away from basketball stuff, I’ve got to tell you guys to check out X-Men: Apocalypse. It was definitely a dope movie!
Then, of course, that Views album is definitely on replay on my playlist!
I must admit that the NBA Finals are really shocking me right now. I thought the series would go 6 or 7 games, but, right now, it’s looking like it could go 4 or 5. I’m not pulling for either team, I like watching guys on both teams play.
We’ll see what happens!
OK guys I’m gonna get ready to go, but I appreciate everyone hearing me out again on my blog. Gave you guys some news in this one and I’m definitely excited about sticking around in here next season!
Check me out with my next blog coming soon!
