Top 10 cornerback Jaymest Williams commits to South Carolina

LOGANVILLE, Ga. — Jamyest Williams committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks at Grayson High School’s football stadium Saturday afternoon.

Surrounded by friends, teachers and family, Williams put on a Gamecocks visor, ending a roughly three-year recruiting process.

“Relieved, really,” Williams said in a brief interview with TEGNA partner 11Alive. “Got it over with. Glad I got it over with.”

“This is a great opportunity for me and my family. I think it’s going to put me in the best position to succeed,” he added.

The senior cornerback out of Grayson High School is the No. 10 athlete in the country and is considered one of the best cornerbacks in the country, according to Rivals.com.

Williams narrowed it down to five schools before his announcement Saturday. They were South Carolina, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State and Tennessee. His first college offer was from Georgia Tech back in 2013.

While everyone suspected Williams would be heading out to Columbia, S.C. next year, University of Georgia fans were clinging on to a little bit of hope, but were disappointed.

What did Williams have to say to those fans?

“Well, you know…,” Williams said stopping, then burst out laughing. He knew to be careful with his words. Georgia fans are a passionate bunch.

“Spurs up!” Williams said.

Williams is the fourth four-star commit for the Gamecocks this month, and he is one of the highest ranked players to commit to South Carolina in several years.
