The American Family Insurance Hoophall West is back with high school boys basketball teams trying to show they belong on the same court with some of the nation’s best.
It runs Friday and Saturday at Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.) High School. CBS Sports Network will televise Friday’s first two games.
Phoenix St. Mary’s (3-0), led by 6-foot-10 junior K.J. Hymes, is up first against New York’s Christ the King Church at 4.
This will be a great chance for Hymes to show how much he has progressed since his sophomore year with his physical maturity, especially on Saturday when the Knights take on Southern California powerhouse No. 5 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.).
Hymes became one of the state’s most recruited 2018 basketball players in the summer during showcases. He had good games to begin this season, both offensively and defensively. But this figures to be his toughest competition so far this year.
“What an exciting time for St. Mary’s athletics to be able to participate in this event,” coach Ty Amundsen said. “Hymes is doing really well. He is a lot more active on the offensive and defensive ends. There is a certain level of confidence he is playing with right now. I expect huge improvement.”
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), which blew out St. Mary’s last year in a game in Scottsdale, takes on Chino Hills (Calif.) at 5:30 in another CBS Sports Network game.
Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.) plays Hayward (Calif.) Moreau Catholic at 7 in a battle of the guards. Corona del Sol (3-0) is led by guards Alex Barcello (Arizona signee) and Saben Lee (Vanderbilt). Moreau is led by Grand Canyon signee point guard Damari Milstead, who was averaging 35.5 points and five assists after two games. Milstead teamed up with current GCU freshman Oscar Frayer at Moreau last year.
Basha (Chandler Ariz.), led by the inside-outside combo of forward Gabe McGlothan and guard Terrell Brown, plays Lake Oswego (Ore.) at 8:30, followed by national prep powers Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix) against Westbury Christian (Texas). Hillcrest is led by 7-foot DeAndre Ayton, the top 2017 player in the nation, who signed with UA.
There will be six more games on Saturday, beginning with host Chaparral, led by guard Colten Kresl, against No. 21 Heritage Christian (Calif.) at noon.
Gilbert Perry, led by former Corona del Sol coach Sam Duane Jr., plays Lake Oswego at 1:30, followed by Basha against Moreau Catholic at 3.
Corona del Sol plays Christ the King at 4:30, St. Mary’s takes on Mater Dei at 6, followed by No. 1 La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.) against Westbury Christian at 8.
