Barnegat (N.J.) standout senior left-hander Jason Groome will start Wednesday when the Bengals will host Manchester in a Shore Conference Class B South game, Barnegat coach Dan McCoy said via text Monday morning.
Groome has been ineligible since April 14 for a violation of the NJSIAA’s transfer rule when he moved back to Barnegat from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. last September.
He did not have a bona-fide change of address when he transferred back to Barnegat from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla last September. The transfer rule states under those circumstances a student-athlete must sit either 30 days or half their team’s games, whichever comes first. Barnegat had to forfeit games Groome pitched in against Point Pleasant Boro on April 5 and Central on April 11. Wednesday is the first day Groome is eligible because Barnegat will be past the halfway point of its schedule.
