Thursday was not a banner day for the high school coaching fraternity in the San Diego area.
As reported by San Diego Fox affiliate KSWB, Santana football and track coach Keith Silvia and Vista boys basketball coach Charlie Mercado were both arrested and handed charges of sexual molestation in connection to a relationship with a minor. The men could also face grooming charges by the time they are brought up for trial. Both men have been fired from their positions with their respective schools.
Silvia stands accused of meeting a high school junior over the course of four months to engage in a sexual relationship at an off-campus location. The relationship was revealed by letters to the underaged girl in question that were discovered by her parents in a backpack.
The Vista coach is accused of a similar crime, with a high school junior reporting an illicit incident at an off campus location. Mercado had served the Vista program for 11 years before he was fired in May as the investigation into these allegations moved forward.
