Middle Tennessee Christian’s Jack Mitchell and Lucas Dale discuss a 35-0 win over Cannon County Friday.

After piling up more than 1,000 yards rushing in his first four meetings with Brentwood Academy, the senior Tennessee commitment and reigning Division II-AA Mr. Football Back of the Year delivered yet another stat-stuffing performance against his Williamson County rivals.

And this time, it paid off for the Big Red, which captured a 31-24 win over the defending state champion Eagles, avenging last season’s double-overtime BlueCross Bowl defeat.

“It wasn’t really all about revenge,” Chandler said. “It was just about coming out here and playing a good game.”

Chandler and the Big Red did exactly that.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound back, who eclipsed the 6,000-yard rushing mark for his career in MBA’s Week 7 win at Pope John Paul II, finished with 341 yards rushing while averaging a whopping 16.2 yards per carry.

“It was just a great game right off the bat,” said Chandler, who sprinted 61 yards for a score on just the second play from scrimmage — the first of his four touchdown runs. “We were able to open up holes all night. The offensive line did a great job of seeing their blocks, keying in on them and just moving the ball and moving the line of scrimmage.”

Chandler also scored on touchdown runs of 82, 72 and one yard for the Big Red (7-1, 4-0 in DII-AA E/M), which claimed sole possession of first place in the East/Middle Region standings with Friday’s win.

“He’s a great running back, we all know that,” MBA coach Marty Euverard said. “But we’ve got a great offensive line that loves him and wants to block for him, and he is no doubt one of the best around.”

And unlike in last year’s state championship loss to the Eagles (5-2, 3-1), when the run-heavy Big Red used its passing game early to help soften up the opposing defense and open up holes for its running game, there was no such misdirection on Friday.

“We knew if we came out and moved the line of scrimmage that it was going to be a good game,” said Chandler. “I feel like that’s what we did.”
