The Resurrection Christian football team’s 2016 season is very similar to its 2015 campaign so far.
The Cougars (9-0) moved up a class to 2A, but still went a perfect 9-0 in the regular season to earn the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.
RCS will host No. 15 Platte Valley (4-5) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Fossil Ridge. The teams met in Week 2 of the regular season, with RCS winning a close 24-22 contest.
The Cougars were the No. 2 seed in 1A after a perfect regular season last year. They made the semifinals in each of their last two seasons in 1A.
After a couple of close wins early in the year, RCS has been dominant. The Cougars have outscored their opponents 284-13 in their last six games.
RCS is averaging 41 points per game and allowing seven.
The winner of Friday’s game will advance to next week’s quarterfinals to face the winner of No. 7 Faith Christian and No. 10 Delta.
Note: The day and time of Resurrection Christian’s playoff game was originally Friday night before RCS moved it to Saturday. This schedule has been updated to reflect Saturday’s game time.
The latest RPI standings for local 5A teams paint a bleak picture for their playoff hopes.
Fossil Ridge (6-3) dropped two spots after its win last week and the SaberCats now sit No. 25 in the Class 5A RPI standings. Fossil Ridge plays at Horizon (6-3, No. 21 in RPI) on Friday to end the regular season.
Poudre (5-4) dropped six spots after its loss and sits No. 26 in 5A. The Impalas host Highlands Ranch (6-3, No. 9 in RPI) on Thursday to end the regular season.
Rocky Mountain (1-8) is No. 32.
Sixteen teams make the 5A playoffs, with seven conference winners earning automatic bids and the other nine spots handed out to the top remaining RPI teams.
In 4A, Windsor (6-3) is unlikely to win its conference, but the Wizards look to be in line to earn a strong seed. Windsor, the defending 4A champion, is No. 4 in RPI. The Wizards host Fort Collins (2-7, No. 32 RPI) on Friday to end the regular season. The Lambkins will miss the playoffs.
